Diamond core drill bits for concrete, reinforced concrete and masonry

A diamond core drill bit is a steel tube with diamond segments welded to the front. It cuts a ring out of the material; the core remains in place and is extracted after drilling. This creates round holes ranging from 16 to 500 mm in concrete, reinforced concrete, masonry, sand-lime brick and clay brick, without impact and without causing cracks in the surrounding material. Many people refer to them as core drills, drill bits or diamond drill bits, but they are all the same tool. The HSS hole saw for steel is a different tool; it is classified under ‘Metal drill bits’. Our diamond core drill bits are available for wet and dry use, with and without soft-hammer capability, in working lengths from 160 to 450 mm.

Core drill bits: wet or dry

The material and the equipment determine which bit is suitable.

Wet diamond core bits for concrete

Wet drilling is used in concrete and reinforced concrete. Water cools the segments and flushes out the drill cuttings; the laser-welded segments can withstand reinforcement. Our wet diamond core bits with a working length of 450 mm cover 33 diameters ranging from 16 to 500 mm, with a 1 1/4" UNC shank.

Dry diamond core bits for masonry

Drilling in masonry, sand-lime brick and clay brick is carried out dry; the dust is extracted via the suction system into an industrial vacuum cleaner. Our dry diamond core bits are available with a 160 mm working length and M16 shank for light-duty hand-held tools, and with 300, 400 and 450 mm working lengths and a 1 1/4" UNC shank for the 202 series. The soft-hammer versions feature segments that can also cut through reinforced concrete dry.

Back box cutters for sockets

For switch and junction boxes, there is the short core bit: our back box cutters in 68, 72, 76 and 82 mm, M16, for masonry, sand-lime brick and clay brick, with turbo segments for abrasive stones.

Diamond drill bits for drills or core drilling machines: shanks and adaptors

The shank must fit the spindle; otherwise, an adapter is required:

A diamond core drill bit can also be used on a drill or hammer drill, without hammer action and with an adapter for SDS Plus, SDS Max or hexagonal shanks. For diameters over 82 mm and for concrete, the core drill is the correct tool; a standard drill lacks both the torque and the speed range required for this. All adaptors can be found under ‘Adaptors’.

Segments, effective length and service life

The segments are the wear parts. Laser-welded, they withstand heat and reinforcement; sintered turbo segments cut faster through soft, abrasive materials. The working length is the maximum drilling depth without an extension: 160 mm is sufficient for internal walls, 450 mm for external walls and ceilings; for greater depths, an extension is required. Service life depends more on the drilling method than on the bit itself: use water or extraction, ensure the speed is appropriate for the diameter, and apply minimal pressure. A bit that becomes blunt when drilling into concrete can be resharpened on the sharpening plate.

Core bit sets

Anyone starting out with core drilling should opt for the case set containing five dry diamond core bits for concrete and masonry, 1 1/4" UNC, 170 mm working length, in diameters suitable for pipes, cables and junction boxes.

Why choose diamond core drill bits from Kernlochbohrer.com

Our drill bits are designed to fit our core drilling machines; the shank fits without an adapter, and the segments are approved for soft-hammer drilling where this is specified. Over 5,000 professionals trust us; we are Trusted Shops certified. We’ll advise you on which core bit is suitable for your material and your machine over the phone, by email or via WhatsApp.
