Metal drill bits for steel, stainless steel and aluminium

A metal drill bit cuts; it does not hammer. The cutting edge on the drill bit head removes a chip, which is why the cutting material, the grind and the rotational speed are more important than force. Our metal drill bits are twist drill bits made from HSS and HSS-Co for steel, stainless steel, aluminium and plastic, as well as HSS hole saws with a Weldon shank for Magnetic drill presses. Acrylic and Plexiglas require drill bits with a different cutting edge; we do not stock these.

Twist drill bit, stainless steel drill bit or core drill: which drill bit for which job

HSS-Co and titaniumstainless steel drill bits 1 to 10 mm in a 19-piece setStainless steel, steel, cast steel, cast ironDrill, pillar drill
HSS hole saws, Weldon 1912 to 50 mmSteel, beams, sheet metal from 30 mm cutting depthMagnetic drill

The twist drill bit in the drill chuck drills up to 13 mm. For larger diameters and when drilling multiple holes in steel beams, the core drill is faster: it cuts only the ring, requires a fraction of the force and ejects the core.

HSS, HSS-G and HSS-Co: the differences

HSS is high-speed steel, the base material for all metal drill bits. HSS-R is roll-forged and inexpensive, whilst HSS-G is ground from solid stock and runs more smoothly with a sharper cutting edge; this is the standard for steel. HSS-Co, also known as HSS-E, contains 5 or 8 per cent cobalt in the alloy and remains hard under the heat generated by stainless steel and high-strength steel. A titanium coating reduces friction and further extends tool life. Our individual drill bits are HSS 6542; the set is HSS-Co 5 per cent with titanium.

Metal drill bit sets for workshops and assembly

The 19-piece set, ranging from 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments, covers centre holes and through holes for standard threads. The 7-piece centre drill set, ranging from 12 to 22 mm, drills screw holes for M12, M16 and M20 in steel construction. Both are available in a case or a cassette.
