Magnetic drill for core drilling in steel

A magnetic drill is a pillar drill that attaches itself to the workpiece using an electromagnet. Instead of bringing the steel beam to the machine, you place the machine on the beam, switch on the magnet and drill on the spot, even on a wall or overhead. Our magnetic core drilling machines use HSS hole saws with diameters of up to 35 and 50 mm to drill into steel, in steel construction, on railings, gates, beams and plant structures.

How the magnet holds: holding force and material thickness

The magnetic base attaches to the workpiece with a force of 14,800 or 15,600 N, which is equivalent to approximately 1.5 tonnes. This force requires ferromagnetic steel of sufficient thickness and a clean, flat surface; on thin sheet metal, rust, paint or stainless steel, the magnet holds less firmly or not at all. A holding force sensor only releases the motor once the holding force is sufficient; the safety belt secures the machine in the event of a power cut; and the overload protection stops the motor before the core drill becomes jammed.

HSS hole saw with Weldon shank

A core drill cuts only the ring, not the entire surface, and therefore requires only a fraction of the force needed by a Twist drill bit of the same diameter. Our machines have a 19 mm Weldon chuck; the core drill is clamped in place with two screws, and the ejector pin pushes the core out after drilling. Coolant is fed from the coolant reservoir via the shank directly to the cutting edge, which extends the tool’s service life. Suitable HSS hole saws are available individually and in sets.

Buying a magnetic drill: drilling diameter, stroke, speed

MachineCore drill up toHolding forceSpeedWeight
MKB-35HD35 mm14,800 N100 to 830 rpm, continuously variable12 kg in carrying case
MKB-50HD50 mm15,600 N100 to 810 rpm, continuously variable13 kg in carrying case

Both feature soft start and infinitely variable speed: large core bits run slowly at full torque, whilst small core bits and Twist drill bits run quickly. If you mainly drill holes up to 35 mm for screws and anchors, choose the MKB-35HD; if you drill through-holes and large bolted joints, choose the MKB-50HD.
