Hand-held core drilling machines: drilling without a stand
A hand-held core drilling machine is operated with both hands, just like a large drill. It requires no dowels, no vacuum plate and no mounting frame; you simply position the drill bit and start drilling. For socket holes, pipe penetrations and ceiling drill holes up to 162 mm, the hand-held core drill is therefore the tool most frequently taken out of the trolley. Our hand-held core drilling machines weigh between 3.7 and 7.8 kg, feature a soft-start function and a clamping collar handle for the second hand.
Hand-held core drill for sockets, pipe penetrations and ceiling holes
Three machine classes cover hand-held applications:
| Class | Hand-held drilling diameter | Weight | Typical applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light-duty wet drilling machines | up to 82 mm in concrete | 4.4 kg | Sockets, small penetrations, overhead ceiling drilling |
| Lightweight dry drilling machines | up to 132 mm in concrete, 202 mm in masonry | 3.7 kg | Sockets and penetrations in masonry without water |
| 202 class | up to 162 mm in concrete | 6 to 7.8 kg | Exhaust air, air conditioning, waste water, also in stud walls up to 202 mm |
When drilling overhead into ceilings, every kilo counts – this is where lightweight tools have the advantage. For penetrations from 100 mm in concrete, opt for the 202 class with an H-handle or P-handle. The rear H-handle helps with lifting and guiding the tool through ceilings and floors, whilst the P-handle keeps the tool compact when there is little space behind the machine, such as in a cellar between pipes.
Wet or dry, handheld
Use wet drilling for concrete and reinforced concrete. The water supply comes from a water pressure tank with a pressure pump; the tools have a water connection with a ball valve for this purpose. For dry drilling in masonry, use a dry diamond core bit and a dust extraction attachment; this is fitted between the spindle and the bit and therefore also determines the chuck type. Our 202-series soft-hammer machines, equipped with a brushless motor, can drill both wet and dry; activated pulses assist with dry drilling in harder materials.
What is the maximum diameter for free-hand drilling?
The limit is determined by the torque you need to apply and the bit’s response when starting the drill hole. In concrete, this ranges from 82 to 162 mm for our tools; in masonry, it is higher. Above this limit, and for any drill hole that must be precisely at right angles, the tool must be mounted on the Core drilling rig. Each of our hand-held machines has a clamping collar for this purpose – 60 mm on the 202 series – and can drill up to 202 mm when mounted on the stand. If you purchase the machine as a set with the stand, you’ll find both under ‘Core Drilling Systems’.
Accessories for hand-held core drilling machines
For freehand drilling, you’ll need diamond core drill bits with 1 1/4" UNC or M16 threads, back box cutters ranging from 68 to 82 mm, a pilot drill to prevent the core bit from shifting when positioned, a Dust extraction attachment for dry drilling and a water pressure tank for wet drilling. If a core bit becomes stuck after drilling, it can be loosened using the quick-release ring or an open-ended spanner on the spindle.
