Dry diamond core bits for masonry, sand-lime brick and clay brick
A dry diamond core bit drills without water. This is the bit for masonry, sand-lime brick and clay brick, for rooms where water must not be allowed to fall onto the floor, and for quick, freehand drilling. The dust is collected via a suction system and fed into an industrial vacuum cleaner. Our dry diamond core bits are available in four ranges with working lengths of 160, 300, 400 and 450 mm, and diameters ranging from 32 to 305 mm.
What makes a dry diamond core bit special
Without water, the bit must dissipate its own heat. Dry diamond core bits therefore feature segments with a softer bond that cut freely during drilling, turbo segments with grooves for increased cooling surface area, and grooves or slots in the shank to remove the cuttings. Our dry diamond core bit with a 400 mm working length has spiral grooves that carry the drill cuttings away from the cut. It is not possible to use a wet diamond core bit in dry conditions, as its segments will vitrify.
Dry drilling in concrete
Concrete can only be drilled dry with the correct segments, and preferably using soft-hammer mode. Our soft-hammer dry diamond core bits with working lengths of 300 and 450 mm have segments that remain capable of cutting through concrete and reinforced concrete; pulses activated on the soft impact core drilling machine break up the material in front of the segment. With dust extraction, they also maintain their service life in these conditions. For large diameters in reinforced concrete, the Wet diamond core bit remains the first choice.
Service life: how long a dry diamond core bit lasts
Service life depends on three factors: dust extraction, rotational speed and pressure. Without dust extraction, the drill dust remains in the cut, the segments overheat and become blunt. Excessive rotational speed with large diameters polishes the diamonds, whilst too much pressure causes them to break off. A dry diamond core bit that becomes blunt can have its diamonds re-exposed on a sharpening plate or by drilling into a piece of sand-lime brick. The segment height indicates how much material is left.
M16 shank and extraction
| Series | Effective length | Diameter | Shank | For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 160 mm dry diamond core bit | 160 mm | 32 to 152 mm | M16 | DKB102/H direct fit, others via adapter |
| Soft-hammer dry diamond core bit 300 mm | 300 mm | 32 to 202 mm | 1 1/4" UNC | Hand-held soft-hammer tools |
| Dry diamond core bit 400 mm | 400 mm | 32 to 202 mm | 1 1/4" UNC | 202 class, masonry and concrete |
| Soft-impact dry diamond core bit 450 mm | 450 mm | 32 to 305 mm | 1 1/4" UNC | Soft-hammer tools, including those mounted on a stand |
The dust extraction attachment is positioned between the spindle and the bit; on M18 tools, this takes the form of an adapter for M16 or 1 1/4" UNC. Short back box cutters are available for sockets, whilst the starter case set contains five Dry diamond core bits.
