HSS hole saw

HSS hole saws cut only the ring in steel and are many times faster than Twist drill bits when drilling screw holes in beams. Our core drill bits with a 19 mm Weldon shank are available in sizes from 12 to 50 mm with a cutting depth of 30 mm, either individually or in a 7-piece set, for our MKB-35HD and MKB-50HD magnetic drills.

HSS hole saws with Weldon shank for Magnetic drill presses

An HSS hole saw cuts only the ring in steel; the core in the centre remains in place and falls out as a core. This requires only a fraction of the force needed by a Twist drill bit of the same diameter and is many times faster for diameters of 20 mm and above. Our HSS hole saws are available from 12 to 50 mm with a cutting depth of 30 mm and a 19 mm Weldon shank, in increments of one millimetre up to 29 mm, and in standard sizes above that, with or without an ejector pin.

Drilling into steel beams: core drill bits or hole saws

For screw holes in beams, in sheet metal from 5 mm thick and in sections, there is no alternative to the core drill: the bimetal hole saw overheats and becomes blunt when used in thick steel, whilst a twist drill bit over 13 mm requires a heavy-duty bench drill and takes a long time. The core drill bit in the Magnetic drill is held against the beam, drills at low speed with cooling lubricant fed through the chuck, and is through in a matter of seconds.

The cutting depth of 30 mm is the maximum material thickness. The ejector pin centres the drill bit on contact and ejects the drill cuttings after drilling; for individual drill bits, it is supplied as an optional extra, whilst the set includes 14, 18 and 22 mm sizes for M12, M16 and M20.

Compatible magnetic drills

The Weldon 19 mm chuck is used with our MKB-35HD core drills (up to 35 mm) and MKB-50HD core drills (up to 50 mm). The shank has two flanges; it is held in place by two clamping screws, and the cooling lubricant flows from the machine’s reservoir through the chuck to the cutting edge.
