Stainless steel drill bits for V2A and V4A
Stainless steel hardens during drilling: where the cutting edge rubs rather than cuts, the material becomes harder than the drill bit. A stainless steel drill bit therefore requires a cutting material that remains hard when heated, and a sharp edge that immediately removes a chip. Our stainless steel drill bit set contains 19 drill bits ranging from 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments, made from HSS-Co with 5 per cent cobalt and a titanium coating, suitable for stainless steel, steel, cast steel and cast iron.
Why standard HSS drill bits fail when used on stainless steel
HSS loses its hardness at the cutting edge from around 600 degrees. Stainless steel is a poor heat conductor; the heat remains at the cutting edge, the drill bit turns blue and becomes blunt, then it starts to grind, and the stainless steel hardens beneath it. Cobalt in the alloy increases the heat resistance; a fully ground drill bit cuts from the very first revolution. This requires the correct working method: low speed, high pressure, cutting oil, and no idling on the surface.
Stainless steel drill bit sets
The set covers 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments, with a cylindrical shank to fit any drill chuck. You can use these to drill core holes and through holes for standard threads in stainless steel railings, brackets and fittings. All sets can be found under ‘Metal Drill Bit Sets’, whilst individual HSS drill bits for structural steel are listed under ‘Twist drill bits’.
