HSS twist drill bits to DIN 338
The twist drill bit is the quintessential drill bit for metal: two cutting edges, two flutes that carry the chips upwards, and a cylindrical shank suitable for any drill chuck. DIN 338 is the short version most commonly used in workshops and on assembly lines. Our HSS twist drill bits are available individually in 5, 6, 8 and 10 mm – the four sizes that run out the quickest – made from HSS 6542 for steel, metal, plastic and wood.
HSS or HSS-Co: when to use cobalt
HSS 6542 is a high-alloy high-speed steel containing tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, and retains its cutting edge even at high cutting speeds. It is suitable for structural steel, aluminium, brass and plastic. However, when working with stainless steel, hardened steel or thick sheet metal, the cutting edge overheats and loses its hardness; in such cases, HSS-Co with cobalt is required, which is included in our stainless steel drill bit set.
Point angle, coating and shank
The point angle of 118 degrees is the standard for steel; 135 degrees with a cross-ground point, centred without a centre point, makes it easier to start drilling into round and sloping surfaces. The HA cylindrical shank fits into any three-jaw drill chuck. When drilling, the speed is crucial: the larger the diameter, the slower the speed; a size 10 drill bit in steel runs significantly slower than a size 5. A drop of cutting oil extends the service life of any Metal drill bit.
Diameters and lengths
The four individual sizes are designed to match the centre holes and through-holes of standard threads: 5 mm for an M6 centre hole, 6 mm for an M5 through-hole and an M7 centre hole, 8 mm for an M8 through-hole with clearance, and 10 mm for an M10 through-hole. All sizes from 1 to 10 mm in 0.5 mm increments are included in the Metal drill bit set.
