Pilot drills and centre points for core bits and back box cutters
A pilot drill is the thin drill bit in the centre of the core bit, which pre-drills when starting by hand and guides the core bit until the ring is seated in the material. A centring tip does the same thing without drilling; it is removed after the initial drilling. Both are used freehand; when mounted in a drill press, the press guides the bit.
Why use a pilot drill?
A hole saw has nothing in the centre to hold it in place. When positioned by hand, it drifts across the surface, scrapes the wall and starts at an angle. The Pilot drill or centre point provides the reference point; after a few millimetres of the ring has been cut, the core bit finds its own guide, at which point the Pilot drill is removed – otherwise it slows the bit down and breaks during soft hammering.
Which length for which adapter
| Part | Length | Mount | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pilot drill ZB | 120 / 200 / 210 / 230 mm | Morse taper | Adapter with Morse taper seat, carbide tip |
| Centring tip for diamond core drill bits | 364 / 465 / 514 mm | G 1/2" | Crowns from 42 mm on 1 1/4" UNC spindles, fitted into the spindle |
| Centring tip for Dust extraction attachment M18 | Ø 9 mm | plug-in | Dust extraction attachment M18 to M16 |
| Pilot drill for DKS-132 | 160 mm, Ø 8 mm | Tapered shank | DKS-132 dry drilling machine |
The length of the tip depends on the working length of the core bit; it must protrude from the front of the core bit, hence the three lengths. The same applies to the Pilot drill in the adapter: 120 mm for back box cutters and short core bits, 230 mm for long ones.
Carbide tip and Morse taper
The ZB pilot drill has a carbide tip that remains sharp for a long time when drilling into masonry and sand-lime brick, and a Morse taper that sits in the adapter and is knocked out using the drive wedge. The centring tip with G 1/2" is inserted into the spindle without tools, pressed in briefly and firmly until the guide circle is in place; on hammer drills, this should be done with the hammer action switched off, after which it is removed. Sets comprising adapters with Pilot drills can be found under ‘Adapters’.
