Core drilling machines for concrete, reinforced concrete and masonry
A core drilling machine drives a Diamond core drill bit through concrete, reinforced concrete and masonry, leaving behind a round drill core. It operates without percussion. The borehole therefore retains its dimensions, and the wall around the hole remains intact, unlike with a hammer drill. This is used to create passages for pipes, cables and conduit, openings for exhaust air, air conditioning systems and heat pumps, holes for sockets and switches, and boreholes for waste water and heating pipes. Depending on the region and manufacturer, the same tool is known as a core drill, core hole drill or core drilling machine; in electrical installation work, it is also referred to as a socket cutter. Many people simply say ‘core drill’, meaning either the machine itself or the core bit. You can buy core drilling machines from us in every size, from 82 mm handheld models up to 502 mm bench-mounted models.
Hand-held core drilling machines or those mounted on a Core drilling rig
Before performance comes guidance. A core drill is operated by hand or mounted on a core drilling rig – some people also call this a tripod – and many of our machines can do both.
| Design | Drilling diameter | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| Hand-held | up to 82 mm (lightweight machines), up to 162 mm (202 series) | Boxes, feed-throughs, multiple drill holes in varying positions |
| Hand-held in a drill stand | up to 202 mm | Perpendicular holes, series of holes in one location |
| Stand-guided | up to 352, 402 and 502 mm | Large wet drilling in concrete and reinforced concrete |
| Core drilling system | up to 502 mm, depending on the machine | Machine and stand as a matched set |
A hand-held core drilling machine is ready for use in a matter of minutes and does not need to be secured to the surface; for many small drill holes in varying locations, the hand-held core drilling machine remains the quicker option. With a clamping collar and collet, it can also be fitted into a core drilling rig, which is secured to the surface using wall plugs or a vacuum plate. For diameters of around 200 mm or more, and for any drilling that must be precisely at right angles, a stand-mounted core drill should be used with the rig. Anyone buying a new core drill with a stand should opt for the core drilling system: the collet and clamping collar are compatible, and the stand supports the drill’s maximum drilling diameter.
Wet or dry drilling
The material determines the drilling method, and the drilling method determines the drill bit and accessories.
Wet drilling in concrete and reinforced concrete
Concrete and reinforced concrete are drilled wet, so a water supply is part of the equipment. The water cools the diamond segments, flushes the drill cuttings out of the cut and binds the dust. It comes from a tap or from a water pressure tank with a pressure pump; a water collection ring catches it as it runs down the wall.
Dry drilling in masonry
Our machines drill dry in masonry, using a dry diamond core bit and a Dust extraction attachment fitted to the machine. The site remains dry, with the drill cuttings collected in the vacuum unit.
Soft hammer action for harder materials
Some of our machines have a switchable soft-hammer function for dry drilling in harder materials. Gentle pulses assist the feed during core drilling, whilst the material around the hole remains undamaged. The product overview specifies which machines are suitable for wet, dry or both types of drilling.
Buying a core drill: how to choose the right machine
Five steps to finding the right core drill:
- Determine the largest drilling diameter you need, both when operating by hand and when mounted on a stand. This sets the parameters.
- Check the power and speed settings. Higher wattage and a second or third speed setting keep the rotational speed within the correct range, even with large core bits.
- Choose the tool holder to suit your drill bits: 1 1/4" UNC for our larger machines, M16 or M18 for the lighter ones. If it doesn’t fit, use an adapter.
- Align the clamping collar with the stand’s clamping holder – usually 60 mm on our models.
- Pay attention to weight and handle shape if you do a lot of free-hand and overhead drilling.
Diamond core drill bits and accessories for core drilling machines
The tool is an integral part of the rig; we stock everything that connects to a core drilling rig:
- Diamond core drill bits for wet or dry use, back box cutters from 68 to 82 mm for sockets
- Adapters for bits with different threads, extensions for thick walls
- Pilot drills for hand-held positioning
- Vacuum fixing for the stand, where dowel holes are not permitted
- Spare parts such as carbon brushes and shaft seals
