Hole saws for wood, plastic and plasterboard

A hole saw is a ring-shaped circular saw blade with a Pilot drill, designed to cut round holes in panels and walls where a Diamond core drill bit would be excessive: wood, laminate, plastic, plasterboard, aluminium and other non-ferrous metals. Our 82 mm hole saw is made from HSS-Co8 bimetal with 8 per cent cobalt, designed for abrasive materials, and comes with a hexagonal adapter to fit any drill chuck and a 71 mm Pilot drill.

Hole saws for sockets and cavity wall boxes: 68 and 82 mm

Hollow-wall boxes are fitted in plasterboard walls; the hole for these is 68 mm, whilst junction boxes require 82 mm. Our 82 mm hole saw cuts out junction and distribution boxes in plasterboard, timber and panelling; the Pilot drill keeps it aligned with the marked line when positioning it. Thanks to its bimetallic teeth, it also cuts through laminate and fibre-reinforced boards, which would quickly blunt a standard hole saw blade.

Hole saw or back box cutter: which is which

The hole saw cuts, whilst the back box cutter grinds. In wood, plasterboard and plastic, the hole saw is quicker and cheaper. It won’t hold in masonry, sand-lime brick, brick and concrete; for these, you need the back box cutter with diamond segments. Neither is the right tool for tiles or porcelain stoneware. Rule of thumb: anything that produces dust calls for a back box cutter; anything that produces shavings calls for a Hole saw.

Pilot drill and adapter for the drill

The hole saw runs in a cordless or mains-powered drill without hammer action; the hexagonal adapter is clamped in the drill chuck, and the Pilot drill guides it until the ring engages. Then release the pressure and let the saw do the work – this keeps the edge clean and preserves the teeth. If you’re working with a core drill using M16 or 1 1/4" UNC, use the back box cutter with an adapter instead of the hole saw.
