Pile drivers for fence construction, pasture fencing and wooden posts

A pile driver drives posts and stakes into the ground without pre-drilling, without concrete and without a sledgehammer. The petrol engine powers a hammer mechanism that strikes the top of the post 1,350 times per minute, causing the post to sink straight into the ground without splintering. Our pile drivers install wooden posts, metal posts and pipes with diameters ranging from 20 to 120 mm, for pasture fencing, garden fencing, wildlife fencing, viticulture, tree stakes and road signs.

Petrol-powered post driver: impact energy and operation

Both models feature a 4-stroke petrol engine with 1 kW and 55 J of impact energy at 1,350 blows per minute; ‘4-stroke’ means petrol without an oil mixture. The combination switch is located on the handle, allowing you to control the throttle and stop without changing your grip; the throttle lock prevents the driver from striking when it touches the ground. Vibration-dampened handles relieve strain on hands and shoulders when driving long rows of posts. It is supplied in a wheeled case, pre-filled with oil; tools and a spare spark plug are included.

Driving in fence posts and wooden stakes

Place the post driver onto the stake, hold the stake vertically with one hand, and guide the driver with the other hand by the handle. The tool works using its own weight and the hammer mechanism; you simply control the direction. On stony ground, it helps to make a preliminary cut with a crowbar; on very hard ground, pre-drilling is recommended. The sleeve must fit the post; otherwise, the hammer mechanism will split the post head.

The sleeves fit into the hammer head and centre thinner posts so that the blow is delivered straight.

Buying a pile driver: which model for which posts

The decision comes down to two questions. How thick are the posts? For posts up to 80 mm – such as pasture fence posts, vine stakes and metal posts – the 12 kg Joey is sufficient, as it can be held overhead for long periods. For stakes 80 mm and above – such as wooden stakes for garden fences, paddocks and tree stakes – you’ll need the Skippy, which handles stakes up to 120 mm. How many stakes? For individual posts, the weight doesn’t matter, but when driving rows of stakes stretching for hundreds of metres, every kilo you lift counts.
