Back box cutters for sockets, flush-mounted and cavity wall sockets

A back box cutter is a short Diamond core drill bit that drills the round hole in the wall for switches and sockets. Flush-mounted sockets have a diameter of 60 mm; the hole is drilled to 68 mm so that the socket can be fitted with plaster. Our back box cutters are available in 68, 72, 76 and 82 mm with working lengths of 62 and 70 mm, featuring an M16 shank and turbo segments for masonry, sand-lime brick, clay brick and other abrasive stones. Socket drill bits, socket hole cutters, drill bits for sockets: all the same tool.

68 or 82 mm: which diameter for which socket

DiameterForsocket
68 mmSwitch boxes, socket outlets, appliance boxesFlush-mounted box 60 mm
72 and 76 mmSame as 68 mm, with more clearance for plaster or foamFlush-mounted box 60 mm
82 mmJunction boxes, distribution boxesJunction box 70 mm

68 mm is the standard size for all switches and sockets. Use 82 mm for junction boxes and for boxes with a terminal compartment. The intermediate sizes are useful for uneven masonry, where the box would otherwise get stuck.

Drill bit for sockets: back box cutter or Hole saw

In masonry, sand-lime brick, clay brick and concrete, use a back box cutter with diamond segments; a bimetallic hole saw won’t last long in these materials. In plasterboard, timber and drywall, the opposite is true: a 68 or 82 mm hole saw is sufficient here, whilst a back box cutter would be too slow and too expensive. Hollow-wall sockets are fitted in drywall, so a hole saw is required for this.

Back box cutter with dust extraction and Pilot drill

Drilling is carried out dry; the dust is channelled via the Dust extraction attachment on the tool into the industrial vacuum cleaner. The M18-to-M16 extraction adapter has a plug-in centring tip, which is removed after the initial drilling. When working freehand, an adapter with a Pilot drill helps to prevent the hole saw from shifting when it is first positioned.

Back box cutter for drill or core drill

With an M16 shank, the back box cutter fits directly onto our DKB102/H and, via adaptors, onto any other tool: adaptors from 1 1/4" UNC, M18, SDS Plus, SDS Max and hex to M16. When used on a drill or a non-hammer drill, this works in masonry and sand-lime brick; in concrete, a core drill with soft impact core drilling machine is required, for which our back box cutter is approved.
