7-piece HSS hole saw set with Weldon shank for steel, Ø 12 to 22 mm

This 7-piece set is ideal for drilling holes in beams, plates and sections using a Magnetic drill, with all the standard sizes conveniently stored in a case: six core drill bits from Ø 12 to 22 mm, 30 mm cutting depth, 19 mm Weldon shank, plus an ejector pin. Individual sizes and diameters up to 50 mm are available as part of our range of HSS hole saws with a 30 mm cutting depth.

Drill sizes and shank types

The six diameters, in 2-mm increments, cover the screw holes typically found in steel construction: 14 mm for M12, 18 mm for M16 and 22 mm for M20, each with the standard hole clearance, plus 12 / 16 / 20 mm for cables and other through-holes. The Weldon shank is a 19 mm cylindrical shank with a lateral drive surface; the machine’s clamping screw presses against this and holds the drill bit securely in place even under high torque. The ejector pin is located in the centre of the core drill: it centres the drill when it is first positioned and, once the hole has been drilled through, ejects the core from the drill.

Design and cutting material

A core drill removes only the annulus, leaving the core as a disc. This requires less force than a Twist drill bit of the same size and is quicker. The cutting edges are CBN-ground, resulting in a sharper cutting edge and a longer service life than conventional grinding. The cobalt-alloyed high-speed steel retains its hardness even at high cutting temperatures.

Materials

Thanks to its high hot hardness, the set is also suitable for materials that are difficult to machine: unalloyed and alloyed steels up to 1200 N/mm², hot- and cold-work steels, and quenched and tempered steels. Cooling is provided by a cooling lubricant, which the machine feeds through the drill bit to the cutting edge.

Compatible machines

Both of our magnetic drills accommodate the 19 mm Weldon shank and can drill all six sizes: our MKB-35HD with core bits up to Ø 35 mm – at 12 kg, the lighter option if the machine needs to be moved frequently – and our MKB-50HD up to Ø 50 mm, the choice if larger individual drill bits are to be added later. Its coolant reservoir supplies the core drill via the chuck, but the coolant only flows when the ejector pin is in place.
